A Rangpur court on Friday allowed the International Crimes Tribunal to seize the evidence of Abu Sayed murder case from the Police Bureau of Investigation, the investigation agency of the case.

Judge Rashed Hossain of Rangpur Metropolitan Tajhat Cognisance Court passed the order on Thursday following the application of the investigating officer of the ICT Ruhul Amin.

The tribunal’s prosecutor SM Mainul Karim on Friday said that two cases were filed in Rangpur in connection with the Abu Sayeed murder case which were being investigated by Rangpur police superintendent ABM Jakir Hossain of the PBI.

Later, ICT filed a case in connection with the murder, and the investigating officer of the case applied to the court for seizing the evidence from the PIB investigation officer.

Mainul Karim said that the investigation team of the ICT previously visited Rangpur and recorded the testimony of the witnesses in the Abu Sayeed murder case.

‘It will be possible to submit the charge sheet of the case soon after conducting a forensic examination of the seized evidence,’ the prosecutor said.

Abu Sayeed, an English department student of Begum Rokeya University, shot dead in police firing on July 16, 2024 during anti-discrimination student movement in front of the university.

Abu Sayeed’s murder sparked the student movement across the country, which resulted in fall of Awami League regime on August 5.
