A Magura court on Saturday recorded the confessional statement of the prime accused, Hitu Sheikh, over raping an eight-year-old girl on March 6 in the district.
Magura senior judicial magistrate Sabyasachi Roy recorded the confessional statement under section 164 at about 4:30pm on the day as police produced him before the court in the morning, court officials said.
Police took Hitu Sheikh, 50, to the Jhenaidah district jail following his confession of raping the eight-year-old girl who came to visit her sister’s in-laws house.
Earlier on March 11, a Magura court 1 placed the main accused in the rape case on seven-day remand and three others on five-day remand.
The prime accused, Hitu Sheikh, is the father-in-law of the victim’s elder sister, while the other accused are Hitu’s wife Zayeda Khatun, and their two sons Sajib Sheikh and Ratul Sheikh of Nijnanduali village at Magura Sadar.
The other three accused are now on remand in police custody.
The victim died as she suffered cardiac arrest at about 1:00pm on Thursday at Combined Military Hospital when the countrywide protests against rape and violence against women rolled for the seventh consecutive day.
She was buried at Sonaikundi village following her second namaz-e-janaza at Jajira village under Sripur upazila.
While talking to reporters after offering prayers at the rape victim’s grave, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami amir Shafiqur Rahman said that the countrymen wanted to see the implementation of the verdict within next 90 days.
He also delivered a speech at the prayer session programme at Sonaikundi Government Primary School ground.
He urged the people to boycott the rapists socially.
Shafiqur Rahman also met the victim’s family at Jajira and assured the family members of standing by them.
