At least five new incidents of rape came to light since Sunday following the filing of police cases in Jashore, Lalmonirhat, Sirajganj, Cumilla and Narsingdi with the victims aged as young as five.

Besides, four incidents of attempts to rape on girls aged between five and a girl with disability occurred in Dhaka, Lalmonirhat and Jashore between Saturday and Sunday.


The new cases emerged amid a rise in such violence against children and women across the country in the recent weeks.

Four of the rape incidents occurred on Sunday while another incident occurred on March 14.

In Jashore, the police arrested four men in a case filed for raping a woman at Jhikargachha in the district on Sunday.

The arrested, Al Mamun Hossain, 20, Yasin Arafat, 21, Jaber Hossain, 22, and Amirul Islam, 20, were reported to be leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.

The victim called 999 for help, prompting Jhikargachha police station’s officer-in-charge Bablur Rahman Khan and his team to take immediate action, said a press release sent by the Jashore police’s media cell. They rescued the victim from the spot and later arrested the four using mobile tracking.

The police said that the accused approached the victim while purchasing flowers from a shop at Gadkhali Bazar and lured her to a nearby litchi garden, where they raped her.

The ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Lalmonirhat reported that a 15-year-old boy was arrested in a case filed over raping a 5-year-old girl at Hatibandha in the district on Sunday.

Mahmudun Nabi, officer-in-charge of Hatibandha police station, said that the boy took the child to a room, where he raped her and later family members and people of the area rescued her after hearing her screams.

The victim was first taken to Hatibandha Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital for better treatment.

The ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Sirajgnaj reported that an eight-year-old girl was raped by a teenage neighbour.

Quoting victim’s family, Sirajganj sadar police station officer-in-charge Humayun Kabir, said that the accused lured the child and took her to the bathroom and raped her.

She was taken to Shaheed M Monsur Ali Medical College Hospital, he said, adding that police were trying to apprehend the accused.

The ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Cumilla reported that a woman was raped twice at an abandoned house of Laksam upazila Awami League general secretary Mohabbat Ali, brother-in-law of ex-Awami League minister for local government, rural development and co-operatives Md Tazul Islam. 

She was raped while returning home with her husband on March 14.

Laksam police station officer-in-charge Naznin Sultana said that police arrested five for raping and abetting the crime based on the complaints of the victim’s family members.

Meanwhile, United News of Bangladesh reported that a 32-year-old man named Rakib Mia raped a 40-year-old woman at her house in Narsingdi’s Raipura on Sunday night.

According to complaints lodged to Narsingdi’s additional superintendent of police Kalimullah, the accused threatened the victim not to disclose the matter, if disclosed she would face a dire consequence.

The police said that they launched an operation to detain the accused following a directive from the higher authority.
