Workers from two different factories in Gazipur on Tuesday staged demonstrations demanding their wage arrears and the extension of Eid-ul-Fitr holidays.

Food manufacturing company Fu-wang Foods Limited workers blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in Gazipur’s Hotapara area for about an hour demanding their wage arrears while workers of Giant Textile in Baniarchala observed a work abstention demanding extension of their Eid holidays.

Fu-wang Foods Limited workers said that they had been demanding the payment of three months’ wage arrears and bonuses since January.

Despite promises from the factory authorities, the payments were not given and the authorities kept delaying, said the workers.

Workers of the factory stopped working on Tuesday morning.

They came out of the factory at around 9:00am and blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway, halting traffic and causing congestion that led to severe suffering to commuters in the area.

Mukit Hossain, an official from the factory’s human resources and administration department, claimed that the workers’ demand was true as only February’s salary was due.

On information, Joydevpur police, Industrial Police and the army arrived at the scene and negotiated with the factory authorities.

Gazipur Industrial Police inspector Abdul Latif said that the workers lifted the blockade after assurance from the factory authorities.

Workers of Giant Textile in Baniarchala, meanwhile, observed a work abstention demanding extension of their Eid holidays.

According to Industrial Police, the workers staged demonstration from Tuesday morning demanding 12-day Eid holiday and resignation of the factory’s general manager for administration Omar Faruq.

On information, police went to the scene and initiated discussions with the factory authorities to resolve the issue, said police.
