
A three-way clash erupted between Islami Andolon, Bangladesh Nationalist Party, and Jamaat-e-Islami in Monpura of Bhola over the distribution of VGF rice, leaving at least 8 people injured.
The incident took place in front of the 3rd North Sakuchia Union Parishad at 10:00am Sunday.
Leaders, activists, and supporters of BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, and Charonmai Pir’s followers clashed after they did not receive VGF cards.
Abu Sufian, president of North Sakuchia union Jamaat-e-Islami, said that rice distribution for fishermen started on Saturday. It continued on Sunday for Eid, but no one from Jamaat was called. ‘When we went to the union council to meet the administrator, BNP leaders and activists obstructed us, leading to the clash.’
Mohammad Mosharaf Dalal, former vice-president of Monpura upazila BNP, said that they arrived after hearing about the incident and tried to control the situation.
Mohammad Nasiruddin, upazila cooperative officer, said that he didn’t know about the clash. After a brief halt in rice distribution, the process resumed.
Likhan Banik, Monpura upazila nirbahi officer, said that misunderstanding between BNP and Jamaat over rice distribution led to the clash, with around 8 people injured. However, there was no disruption in rice distribution, and the issue was resolved.
Ahsan Kabir, officer-in-charge of Monpura police station, said that a scuffle occurred between BNP, Jamaat, and Islami Andolon leaders over rice distribution.
After the deployment of navy and police forces, the situation had calmed down, and no complaints was filed regarding the incident.
