
The Bogura district police detained five members of the Detective Branch of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police and another early Monday on charges of demanding ransom after abducting two youths.
The detainees are—sub-inspector Shahin Mohammad Anu Islam, constables Ripon Mia, Abul Kalam Azad, Mahbub Alam and Bashir Ali, and microbus driver Mehedi Hasan.
Zedan Al Musa, superintendent of Bogura district police, said that without informing their superiors, the five members of RMP’s DB unit went to Digharkandi village under Dhunat upazila in Bogura on Sunday night and picked up two youths in a microbus on gambling charges.
He said that the accused then took the youths to Mirzapur under Sherpur upazila in the district and demanded Tk 12 lakh ransom.
Later, the accused released the youths after getting Tk 3.30 lakh as ransom. Of the amount Tk 2 lakh was paid in cash and Tk 1.30 lakh was sent via mobile banking.
Zedan Al Musa said that being informed, the Bogura district police started a drive to seize the microbus in Sherpur and Shahjahanpur upazilas.
‘With the help of the Highway Police, we were able to seize the microbus from Birgram village and detained the six accused,’ he added.
The police superintendent further said that as the five accused confessed that they were members of the RMP detective branch, they had contacted the RMP headquarters for confirmation about their identity. The RMP officers told them that the five came to Bogura without informing anyone.
He said that in primary interrogation, the accused DB members said that they were involved in the abduction incident by another of their colleagues named Wahab, a constable at the RMP and a resident of Dhunat upazila.
Referring to their confession, the Bogura police super further said that Wahab came to his village on leave two days ago and called his five colleagues, now arrested, to come to Bogura and abduct the two youths for ransom.
A case against the detainees was underway with the Dhunat police.
Meanwhile, Sabina Yeasmin, additional deputy police commissioner (media) at the RMP, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the five DB members arrested were suspended and further official actions against them were underway.
Sabina Yeasmin also said that constable Wahab returned from leave and joined office in Rajshahi. If the Bogura police with which the abduction case was filed wanted to arrest Wahab, the RMP would hand him over to them, she also said.
