
Two police personnel injured
At least six people were arrested till Thursday afternoon allegedly for robbing a house in the capital’s Dhanmondi area early Wednesday impersonating members of the Rapid Action Battalion.
The gang also allegedly brought fake magistrates and reporters during the robbery.
The six arrested are Farhad Bin Mosharraf, Yasin Ahmed, Mobassher Ahmmed, Wakil Mahmud, Abdullah and Sumon.
Yasin and Wakil are students of a private university, said Dhanmondi police station sub-inspector Raihan Siddiqui Shamim, also the investigation officer in the case.
‘We have produced six people before a Dhaka court seeking seven-day remand and the court granted five-day remand for five of them,’ Raihan said. Â
The robbery incident took place between 4:30am and 5:30am on Wednesday in the six-storey building at Road 8 and police reached the spot after receiving information from the National Emergency Services Helpline 999, according to police and victims.
They said that the miscreants looted Tk 36 lakh from MM Outsourcing on the second and third floor of the building and three bharis of gold and Tk 1.2 lakh in cash from the duplex comprising fifth and sixth floors wearing RAB uniforms and vests.Â
Addressing a press conference at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Media Centre on Thursday, DMP Ramna Division deputy commissioner Masud Alam said that they plotted the robbery impersonating members of law enforcement agencies as they had used RAB vests.
They also brought two fake magistrates and fake reporters of a TV channel and one of them used the boom of GTV.
‘In the fake drive, they also brought five fake student representatives as students are now working like source,’ Masud said, adding that they had climbed over the boundary wall of the building and tied up caretaker and security guards and broke open the gates to enter the house. Â
He said that the robbers’ target was to loot in the duplex flat on the fifth and sixth floors but they started vandalising belongings and looted valuables from the ground floor.
Masud also said that the two policemen were critically injured in an attack by the robbers with rod and locally made weapons.
Following the incident, the building owner’s son Tauhidul Islam Sumon filed a case with the Dhanmondi police station naming 12 people and 10-12 unnamed people on Wednesday.
The plaintiff, Tauhidul Islam, son of building owner MA Hannan Azad, said that the police settled the name of the accused after interrogating the four detained.
‘Police are yet to provide me with a copy,’ Tauhidul, who is also overseeing a gold factory at Tantibazar owned by his maternal uncle, also the owner of a jewellery shop named Alankar Niketan at Basundhara City Shopping Mall.
Dhanmondi police officer-in-charge Kya Swee Nue said that local people managed to detain four people from the spot and they were produced before a Dhaka court on Thursday.
‘We have also arrested Abdullah and Sumon today in the Hazaribagh area,’ the OC added.
He said that police also arrested the driver, Abdullah, and seized the microbus used in the robbery.
Several police officials said that there were serving members of the law enforcement agencies who were involved in the robbery.
Asked about the allegations, DMP Ramna Division DC Masud said that they also heard about the matter.
‘We can confirm the matter after doing a cross-check on the allegations,’ he added.
