Several hundred workers of three garment factories of T N Z Group at Gazipur on Friday continued their sit-in in front of Srama Bhaban in the capital demanding their three months’ wages and festival allowances before Eid-ul Fitr.

The workers of the factories brought out a hungry procession carrying empty plates in their hands that paraded different roads in the city.

They vowed to continue their sit-in programme in front of Srama Bhaban until their dues were paid.

They will announce tougher programmes if their demands are not met, the workers’ leaders said.

On Friday morning, the workers of the three factories–Apparel Plus Echo Limited, TNZ Apparel Limited and Apparel Art Limited–held a press conference beside Srama Bhaban.

At the conference, Mohammad Shahidul Islam, the leader of a factory, said that they had been continuing their sit-in programme for six days, but their demands were not met.

Shahhidul Islam said that the labour adviser on March 27 gave a contradictory statement that the owner of the factory paid wages and festival allowances to the workers, but actually the workers of a factory had got only partial dues.

The workers of the other two factories did not get any dues, Shahidul said.

Moreover, on Tuesday police attacked a peaceful march of the workers towards the labour ministry and at least 20 workers were wounded as police charged batons and used sound grenades, Shahidul said.

Student leader Dilip Roy was seriously wounded during the police action, Shahhidul added.

Labour leaders Mantu Ghosh, Mushrefa Mishu, Mahbubur Rahma Ismail, Faiezul Hakim, Harun-or-Rashid Bhuiyan, Manas Nandi, Shamim Imam, AKM Zahirul Islam, Fayez Hossain, Raju Ahmed, Dilalur Rahman Dulal, Shahidul Islam Sabuj and others attended the press conference.

Leaders of different political parties including the Socialist Party of Bangladesh, the SPB (Marxist), Revolutionary Communist League, Democratic Right Committee, in separate statements on Friday called on the interim government and owners of the factories to pay wages and festival allowances of the workers of the factories immediately.   Â
