The law ministry has cancelled the appointment of Afroza Parvin Silvia as a prosecutor at the International Crimes Tribunal amid widespread social media criticism over her political affiliations with the deposed Awami League.
Silvia was among four Supreme Court lawyers appointed on Thursday as prosecutors with the status of assistant attorneys general.
The other three—Md Mamunur Rashid, Abdus Sattar, and SM Tasmirul Islam—retain their positions.
With these four new appointments, the total number of prosecutors has risen to 18.
Silvia’s appointment sparked controversy on social media, with critics pointing to her active involvement in the Supreme Court Bar Association’s election campaign for the ruling Awami League-backed lawyers’ panel.
Photos circulating online showed her participating in electioneering, posing with senior pro-AL lawyers and making Facebook posts, including one condemning the eviction of Sheikh Hasina and her sister from Ganabhaban during the BNP-led government in October 2001.
Amid mounting criticism, the government on Thursday night moved swiftly to revoke her appointment, underscoring the growing influence of social media in shaping public discourse on judicial and political appointments.
