More than 100 people, including women and children, fell sick allegedly after eating fuchka at an Eid fair in Abhaynagar upazila of Jashore on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr on Monday.

Of them, 100 victims were admitted to Abhaynagar Upazila Health Complex.


Ten are undergoing treatment at Khulna Medical College Hospital as their conditions were stated to be critical.

Following the incident, Fuchka seller Monir Hossain went into hiding.

Hundreds of visitors consumed Fuchka from the shop at the fair on the Eid day.

Upon returning home, they experienced stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and convulsions, forcing them to be hospitalised overnight and by Tuesday, and the number of patients admitted to the hospital rose to nearly 100.

Dr. Raghuram Chandra, a physician at the KMCH, said that food contamination caused sickness with most patients suffering from stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever.

So far, 100 people have been admitted with 10 requiring transfer to the KMCH, he said.

Medical Officer Dr Mahmudur Rahman Rizvi of Abhaynagar Health Complex said, patients with symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea began arriving on Tuesday and then the number started to rise.

Abhaynagar police station officer-in-charge Abdul Alim said they were aware of the incident and searching for the fuchka vendor.
