The heatwave that has been sweeping over parts of Bangladesh since March 27 might retreat over the next three days with a spell of an approaching thunderstorm.

The skies of Bangladesh remained partly cloudy on Friday, increasing the uncomfortable feeling from heat for the people who have been experiencing days as hot as 35C or even more.

‘The thunderstorm spell is likely to begin in Sylhet on Saturday,’ said meteorologist Hafizur Rahman.

‘The rain spell will then move to Dhaka and to the northern regions of Rangpur and Rajshahi over the two days thereafter,’ he said.

The potential thunderstorm spell promises to neutralise the current heatwave, which might not entirely disappear being pushed to pockets in various parts of the country.

The prospect of thunderstorms also raises concern for they are often accompanied with powerful wind and heavy lightning, often leading to numerous deaths.

Scores of people, mainly farmers, die from lightning strikes during the thunderstorm season, which mainly stays between March and May.

On Friday, Bangladesh Meteorological Department recorded the highest maximum temperature of 36.7C in Rajshahi, which substantially fell from the previous day’s highest maximum temperature of 38.2C.

Overcast skies hiding the sun reduced the day temperature, the Met Office said.

The heatwave also swept over the districts of Khulna, Satkhira, Patuakhali, Pabna, Sirajganj, and Rangamati.

The BMD already warned that the day temperature might reach 42C this month. A cyclonic storm is also predicted in the monthly weather forecast for April, the hottest time of year.

Last month, the day temperature exceeded 40C for a day.
