Over two dozen people were injured as two factions of the Awami League allegedly clashed over establishing supremacy in the Durbadanga area of Bilashpur union under Janjira upazila in Shariatpur on Saturday morning.

Followers of local AL leaders Bilashpur union chairman Kuddus Bepari and AL’s volunteer wing Swechchhasebak League leader Jalil Matbor locked in the clash and both groups exploded more than 100 crude bombs, according to police and local people.


They said that the clash began at about 7:00am and continued for more than 30 minutes till police brought the situation under control.

Janjira police officer-in-charge Mohammad Dulal Akanda said that there had been a long-standing dispute between the two groups over establishing supremacy in the area.

‘Several hundred crude bombs were exploded during the clash, and we cannot say how many people were injured in the clash as they took treatment in various health facilities,’ the OC said, adding that they will take necessary legal actions in this regard.

He also said that both the groups were affiliated with the Awami League.

Janjira Upazila Health Complex resident medical officer Md Roman Badsha said that they had given primary treatment to 12 people and one of them was in critical condition.

‘The critically injured patient left the hospital to avoid arrest,’ Roman said, adding that they asked the patient to stay at least for a day but he left the hospital.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Shariatpur could not reach Kuddus Bepari and Jalail Matbor for comments despite repeated attempts over the phone.

A tense situation is prevailing in and around the areas and people were panicked over the incident.

Earlier, a 15-second video of the incident went viral on social media showing both groups were fighting in an open field.

The video also showed that they were throwing crude bombs from buckets wearing helmets.
