
Home affairs adviser retired Lieutenant General Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said on Thursday in Sunamganj that many people told him that they wanted the interim government to stay in power for five years.
Mentioning that the law and order situation in the country had improved, he said, ‘Many people told me that we should stay in power for next five years.’
He made the comments responding to journalists after visiting the Shantiganj police station in Sunamganj in the afternoon.
Earlier on the day in Sylhet, the home affairs adviser said that the police department would be streamlined further if funds were allocated.
He said that the police department could not be reorganized fully.
Many vehicles and police stations were burnt during the anti-discrimination student movement in August last year, he said.
Stating that a single vehicle could not be bought so far for the police, the home affairs adviser said that the police department would be further organised if funds were allocated.
He made the comments while responding to questions from journalists after visiting the Biman Bandar police station in Sylhet at noon.
The adviser, however, claimed that the law and order situation improved a lot in the country compared to previous time.
‘The police are not afraid now of mob justice and that they will go for action if anybody wants to take the law into their own hands,’ he said.
The home affairs adviser, however, admitted that law enforcement agencies were yet to recover all the lost arms of the police.
‘If the looted weapons remain outside, there will be a to security,’ he added.
Responding to another query about issuance of a red notice by Interpol against the deposed prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, he said that there was no new update in this regard.
Earlier at noon, the home affairs adviser came on a sudden visit to the Biman Bandar police station immediately after his arrival in the Sylhet airport.
After inspecting the Biman Bandar police station, the home adviser left Sylhet for Sunamganj.
Jahangir, also holding the portfolio of agriculture ministry, said that there was a lot of fallow land in Sunamganj.
‘The fallow land need to be utilised. A project worth Tk 5 billion is being taken up for the development of the agriculture sector,’ he added.
Sylhet divisional commissioner Khan Md Reza-un-Nabi, Sylhet Range Police DIG Md Mushfequr Rahman, Sunamganj deputy commissioner Mohammad Ilias Mia and Sunamganj district police superintendent Md Tofail Ahmed, among others, were present there at that moment.
