The Border Guard Bangladesh on Wednesday brought 55 Bangladeshi fishermen back from Myanmar’s rebel armed group Arakan Army’s custody.

The Arakan Army handed over the 55 Bangladeshi fishermen to the border security force of Bangladesh at about 12:10pm on the day following repeated attempts by the BGB for their release, according to a BGB press release.

The 55 fishermen in separate groups went to the Bay of Bengal for catching fish at different times, the BGB said, adding that the fishermen crossed the Bangladesh border by mistake and entered the Myanmar territory.

‘The process for handing over the fishermen to their families is underway,’ said BGB 2 Battalion at Teknaf commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Md Ashikur Rahman.

He said that the Arakan Army handed over the fishermen on the zero line of the Bangladesh-Myanmar water border near Shah Porir Island at Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar.
