
A Dhaka court on Wednesday sentenced Abdul Malek, formerly a driver of the Directorate General of Health Services, to five-year imprisonment and his wife Nargis Begum to three-year in jail for amassing illegal wealth.
Judge Md Zakaria Hossain of Dhaka Special Judge Court-6 gave the jail sentences to the couple as the charges against them filed in a case of amassing illegal assets were proved.
The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case in 2021.
The court also fined them Tk 20,000, in default, to suffer three months more in rigorous imprisonment, said ACC prosecutor Asaduzzaman Rana.
The court also asked authorities to confiscate Tk 1.10 crore asset of Malek, he said.
On February 14, 2021, ACC assistant director Syed Nazrul Islam filed the case against Abdul Malek and his wife Nargis Begum
According to the case statement, Malek directly assisted his wife in acquiring wealth worth Tk 1.10 crore beyond known sources of income.
In another graft case filed by the ACC, another Dhaka special judge鈥檚 court on March 23 this year sentenced Abdul Malek to 13-year imprisonment for amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 1.5 crore.
Malek was also sentenced to 30 years of rigorous imprisonment on September 20, 2021 in a case filed against him for possessing firearms and ammunition.
The Rapid Action Battalion arrested him during a drive at Kamarpara under the Turag police in Dhaka city on September 20, 2020. They also seized some firearms and Tk 1.5 lakh in fake currency.
The drive led to filing of two cases against him鈥攐ne for possessing arms and ammunition and the other for possessing fake currencies.
