Battery-run rickshaw pullers blocked the Gulshan-1 crossing on Friday morning for about 10-12 minutes protesting at a joint drive by the Dhaka North City Corporation, Dhaka Metropolitan Police and Gulshan Society.
The incident took place at about 10:45am when members of police and Gulshan Society were checking battery-run auto-rickshaws, according to police and the DNCC.
DMP Gulshan Division additional deputy commissioner for Traffic Ziaur Rahman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they got aggrieved and blocked the Gulshan-1 crossing for 10-12 minutes.
‘As it is one of the busy and important roads in the city, a blockade for any duration creates traffic congestion,’ Ziaur said, adding that 50-60 battery-run-rickshaw drivers marched from Gulshan-1 to Gulshan-2 for about an hour.
During the protest, battery-run rickshaw drivers threatened not to allow pedal rickshaws, if they were not allowed to ply roads.
DNCC public relations officer Mokbul Hossain said that the drives would continue in society areas against battery-run rickshaws as it began on Saturday.
‘We are engaging police, executive magistrates and society members in such drives,’ he added.
