Students from different national minority communities in Khagrachari on Saturday demanded justice for a 22-year-old Marma girl, who was allegedly raped at Khawkhali upazila in Rangamati several times since March 25.
They made the demand at a rally organised by the Bangladesh Marma Student Council.
They also threatened to wage a tougher movement if the perpetrators involved in the rape incident were not arrested within the next 24 hours.
A woman from Marma community was allegedly confined and raped by the son of the landlord of her rented house in Khawkhali upazila in Rangamati several times between March 25 and April 16.
The woman was working at a garment factory in Chattogram residing in the rented house, according to the police.
Khawkhali police officer-in-charge Saiful Islam Sohag told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Friday that the accused, Md Fahim, used to stalk the victim for developing a relationship with her.
Fahim threatened that he would die if she did not agree to have a relationship with him, he said.
The victim filed a case against Fahim and another man for assistance on April 16.
No arrest was made as of Saturday evening.
Besides, students in Rangamati alleged that police obstructed a rally organised by the Bangladesh Marma Student Council’s Rangamati unit at Rangamati Gymnasium at about 10:00am in protest at the rape incident.
Rangamati’s Kotwali police officer-in-charge Sahhed Uddin said that the students did not take anyone’s permission for the programme.
‘We requested them to postpone the programme as there was already a big programme at Rangamati Stadium, just opposite the gymnasium,’ he said, adding that they can hold the programme with permission on another day.
Marma community’s water festival ‘Sangrai’ was held on Saturday, where the Chittagong Hill Tracts affairs adviser was the chief guest along with three other foreign diplomats, police said.
