Primeasia University student Jahidul Islam Parvez who was killed on the university campus in the capital’s Banani area on Saturday was an activist of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

The victim’s cousin Humayun Kabir filed a case with Banani Police Station early Sunday accusing 38 people including two leaders of the Students Against Discrimination for their alleged involvement in the murder.

JCD, in a statement on Sunday, announced demonstration in all educational institutions across the country for today protesting at the killing of Parvez.

Banani police station officer-in-charge Md Rasel Sarwar said that Humayun mentioned the names of eight youths and 25 or 30 other unnamed people as accused in the case.

He said that none was arrested so far in this connection.

The two leaders of the Students Against Discrimination named in the case are SAD’s Banani thana unit joint convener Sobhan Niazi Tushar, 24, and joint member secretary Hridoy Miyaji, 23. Six other named accused in the case are Meheraj Islam, 20, Abu Jahar Gifari alias Pias, 20, Md Mahthir Hasan, 20, Rifat, 21, Ali, 21, and Fahim, 22, the police said.

Parvez, a student of the university’s Textile department, was stabbed to death during a clash with a group of fellow students and outsiders on its campus Saturday afternoon.

Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal president Rakibul Islam Rakib, at a press conference at its central office in the capital’s Naya Paltan area, on Sunday said that Parvez was a member of JCD’s private university unit.

He alleged that the murder was a pre-planned one and orchestrated by the leaders of the Students Against Discrimination.

He said that the murder was committed in front of the university students and teachers even after the university authorities resolved a trivial matter over an altercation between two groups of students.

Several goons of the area led by SAD’s Banani thana committee joint convener Shobhan Niaz Tushar and joint member secretary Hridoy Miyaji were involved in the attack, Rakib claimed.

He demanded a neutral investigation into the murder and immediate arrest of and exemplary punishment for the killers.

SAD central leader and private university convener M JH Monju claimed that none of the SAD leaders was involved in the murder.

He claimed that their Banani thana unit leaders – Tushar and Hridoy – were present in the area but were not involved in attacking the victim.

Socialist Students Front in a statement on Sunday demanded the arrest of and exemplary punishment for the killers.
