
At least four people sustained bullet wounds as two groups allegedly clashed over land in the Dhigri Char area at Ishwardi in Pabna on Friday.
The incident took place at around 10:00am on the day in Charkurlia village under Lakshmikunda union of Ishwardi upazila.
Of the injured, Pillu, 26, son of Rekat Ali of Charkurlia village, and Swaib Hossain, 27, son of Habibul Islam were admitted to Pabna General Hospital and the other two took treatment at different hospitals, said Shahidul Islam, officer-in-charge of the Ishwardi police station.
According to police and local sources, there had been a long-standing dispute between Yasin Ali of Ishwardi and Mukul Uddin of Kushtia over land.
Yasin Ali went to Dhigri Char with 30-35 motorcycles carrying weapons at around 10:00am on Friday, they added.
As soon as Yasin Ali reached the char, Mukul Uddin and his supporters who were already stationed there swooped on them, starting a clash between them, police said.
A resident of the char, who preferred not to be named, said that several chars on the banks of the Padma River, including the char of Digri, were within Ishwardi upazila but were close to Kushtia. According to police, there have been clashes between the two groups over the possession of the char before as the two groups attempted to take possession of the char.
The situation is calm now, the OC said.
