
Gazipur Agricultural University celebrated the World Deoxyribonucleic Acid Day 2025 at the university in Gazipur on Friday.
The GAU celebrated the day to increase awareness about human genes and heredity, encourage science and biology education, and make students interested in genetics and biotechnology, said a press release.
On this occasion, various programmes were taken up by the Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering.
At the beginning of the programme, a rally with placards and festoons was taken out from in front of the IBGE under the leadership of the chief guest of the programme, vice-president of the Bangladesh Academy of Science Zahurul Karim.
Zahurul Karim announced the inauguration of DNA Day by releasing balloons. Later, the National DNA Olympiad exam was held for the students.
In addition, a seminar was held at the Old Auditorium of the university to highlight the usefulness and significance of the day. Zahurul Karim was present as the chief guest in the seminar.
Founding director of the Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering and fellow agricultural scientist of the World Academy of Science Professor Md Tofazzal Islam presented the keynote at the seminar, which was presided over by IBGE director Professor Shah Mohammad Naimul Islam.
Former director of IBGE Professor Md Mahbubur Rahman and former dean of the faculty of veterinary medicine and animal science Professor Md Morshedur Rahman, among others, were present at the seminar.
Tofazzal Islam presented a report titled DNA to Genome Editing: A Revolutionary Chapter in Biology.Â
‘Genome editing is a type of technology through which it is possible to change and delete a specific part of the gene or DNA of an organism with great precision,’ he said.
Zahurul Karim said that the use of DNA in the agricultural sector opened the door to unlimited possibilities.
