
Tamzid Haider Chanchol, Shimul Kumbhkar and Rathindranath Bappy have been elected president, general secretary and organising secretary of the Bangladesh Students’ Union respectively.
A 41-member central committee and a 141-member national council were elected in the council sessions, chaired by Rageeb Nayeem, at the 42nd national convention of the left-leaning student organisation.
The council sessions of the three-day national convention ended on Saturday night.
The newly elected president Chanchol is a student of North South University while general secretary Shimul is a student of Dhaka University and organising secretary Bappy is a student of Gopalganj Science and Technology University.
Nazifa Jannat, Amartya Ray, Maeen Ahmed, Asif Zaman, Sujay Sarkar, Bayjid Rahman, Monisha Wahed and Moetreo Hassan Joeta were elected as the vice-presidents of the central committee while Riddha Anindya and Tanzimur Rahman Rafy were elected as assistant general secretaries.
Modhusudon Karmokar was elected as treasurer while Aminul Islam Emon as office secretary, Meghmallar Bosu as education and research secretary, Akramul Haque Jihad as school student affairs secretary, Antu Arindam as science, technology and international affairs secretary, Durjoy Roy as publicity and publication secretary, Aurny Anjum as cultural secretary, Tabib Mahmud as sports secretary and Tilottoma Etie as social welfare and environment secretary.
Rageeb Nayeem, Rakibul Rony, Mashrukh Jalil, Nirob Sarker Sammo, Md Emon Akanda, Imdad Mohammad, Shovon Pranto, Towkir Ahmed, Ridwan Porbo, Jannatul Naeem, Rakib Hossain, Abu Sayed, Shojib Nogor, Joy Bhowmik and Oishorjo Sarkar were elected as members of the central committee while four posts of the central committee were kept vacant.
The BSU held the convention with the slogan ‘discrimination-free society and education system’ on the Dhaka University campus.Â
It was inaugurated by Samsi Ara Zaman, mother of journalist Tahir Zaman Priyo, who was shot in the head and killed on July 19 during the student-led mass uprising leading to the fall of the Awami League regime.
The last day of the convention featured a cultural programme of Baul songs to celebrate the 73rd founding anniversary of BSU.
Based on four principles — unity, education, peace and progress — the student organisation was established on April 26, 1952, and the first convention was held in November that year.
