Bangladesh national men’s cricket team’s new spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed vowed to make a difference with his work after he arrived in Bangladesh on Tuesday to join the team.
The former Pakistani spinner’s first assignment will be the five-match Twenty20 Internationals series against Zimbabwe, which will begin on May 3 in Chattogram.
Mushtaq, who is under contract with the Bangladesh Cricket Board until the T20 World Cup 2024 in West Indies and USA, met head coach Chandika Hathurusingha and the players on Tuesday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
‘I have to believe as a coach. I am here to make a difference in the spin department. I think I can share my knowledge with young people and senior players. Hopefully we can make a difference,’ he said in a video interview with BCB.
‘I believe you can only coach those teams that are coachable. The young people are very talented cricketers, so we can pass on our experience to them. I believe they are a very talented team. They can challenge any team.’
Being a former leg-spinner himself, a big part of Mushtaq’s work in Bangladesh is likely to revolve around finding wrist-spinners in the country – an area where the Tigers have had scarcity in terms of resources – and also try and improve the only one in the team – Rishad Hossain.
Mushtaq was hopeful that he would be able to do so.
‘There’s always a leg-spinner, mystery spinner and chinaman in the nets in Asia. I think that’s where my experience will come through. Hopefully, we can communicate through BCB. We can meet club and first-class coaches. We can find leg-spinners and chinaman bowlers,’ he said.
Before coaching Bangladesh, Mushtaq worked as the spin bowling coach for England, the West Indies, and Pakistan. Â
