Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan’s poor form has become a matter of worry for the team management ahead of their third ICC T20 World Cup 2024 clash against Netherlands today in St Vincent.
The match will start at 8:30pm with Nagorik TV televising the battle live.
Bangladesh made a good start in the ongoing global meet with a two-wicket victory Sri Lanka in Dallas, where Shakib couldn’t justify his inclusion as he stayed wicketless with the ball, conceding 30 runs from his three-over spell, and then with the bat, he scored only eight off 14 balls, leaving the team in danger.
In the next tie, the all-rounder had a worse performance in both departments as he managed only three runs off four balls and bowled just one over for no wicket, and Bangladesh eventually lost the game by four runs to South Africa.
Taking his performance into account, Bangladesh national team chief selector Gazi Asharaf Hossain told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they will sit with Shakib to know what issues he has been experiencing, which has obstructed his performances in the ongoing global event.
‘We will definitely sit down with Shakib for a meeting to know what type of problem he is facing as he couldn’t bat or bowl according to his potential in our last two battles,’ Gazi Ashraf told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.
He feels that the ace all-rounder might be encountering the eye issues he faced during the 2023 World Cup in India, which led to him performing sub-standardly in all games bar one.
‘I think his eye problem is back. You know he suffered the same during the World Cup in India. Let’s find it out as soon as possible,’ the Bangladesh chief selector said.
He was also perplexed by the performance of almost the whole team.
‘I really can’t understand what’s wrong with our other campaigners as well, despite having all modern technology like video analysis and so forth. I would like to ask them whether they don’t follow video analysis,’ Gazi Ashraf said.
‘Honestly speaking, we didn’t have the same improved technology when we played for the national team. I would say that they are not making the best use of the opportunities provided by the Bangladesh Cricket Board.’
Chandika Hathurusingha and his charges will be desperate to earn their second victory in the tournament against the Dutch to bolster their position in the points table and help them reach the Super Eight stage of the vying for the first time since 2007.
