Bangladesh batters performed poorly throughout their 2024 T20 World Cup campaign, being a major contributor in the team’s poor showing, especially in the Super Eight stage, and their vice-captain Taskin Ahmed admitted that he has not seen the whole batting order go through such a lean patch in his career with the Tigers.
Bangladesh’s batting efforts in tournament can be summed up by one player’s performance – Towhid Hridoy. The batter started the tournament well but could not finish on a high, scoring 153 runs in seven games, and yet he finished as the team’s best batter.
Liton Das was the second-best with 139, while Najmul Hossain Shanto [112], Shakib Al Hasan [111], Mahmudullah [95], and Tanzid Hasan Tamim [76] all struggled to leave an impact.
The whole situation saw the bowlers having to bail them out – something that happened well in the group stages and they won four games – but it did not work out in next phase, resulting in three consecutive defeats.
Taskin, who made his national team debut in 2014, admitted that the batters fell short but hoped they would get out of it soon as well.
‘When we played in USA, the batters had little favour [from the wickets]. Batters from every country struggled,’ he said.
‘We played on better wickets in West Indies. Still, I have been playing for Bangladesh for 10 years, I have never seen batters go through such a lean patch for such a long time. Hopefully, they will get out of it.’
The pacer also accepted that the negatives from the tournament outweighed the positives.
‘Yes, there are positives like the bowling was good throughout the tournament. We got to the Super Eight and won three games for the first time. There are positives but the negatives are more in number. We are as disappointed as everyone, we could not match the expectations,’ Taskin said.
