Uncapped middle order batter Mahidul Islam Ankon replaced Jaker Ali for the second Test against South Africa after the latter suffered a concussion while batting in the nets at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium on Sunday.

Mahidul has scored 1,934 runs in 43 first-class matches. The 25-year-old is fresh from scoring a century for Dhaka Division (118 against Sylhet Division) in the only innings he played last week in the ongoing National Cricket League.

Jaker, the wicketkeeper-batter who scored a fifty in his maiden Test at Mirpur, was hit by a Nahid Rana delivery in the nets on Sunday. But after some attention from the physio, he continued batting.

‘Jaker Ali suffered a concussion while batting in practice yesterday [Sunday].  He has a history of concussions and is still showing symptoms,’ national team physio Bayjedul Islam Khan was quoted as saying in a BCB press release on Monday.

Given his previous concussion record, recovery may take some time. Based on the clinical findings, he has been ruled out of the second Test.’

The second Test between Bangladesh and South Africa starts at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram today.
