Sylhet Strikers captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza is unlikely to feature in the forthcoming edition of the Bangladesh Premier League that starts on Monday due to fitness issues.

Mashrafe, a former lawmaker of the ousted Awami League government led the Sylhet Strikers in the last season, was drafted to play in the same team.

However, Sylhet head coach Mahmud Emon expressed uncertainty regarding Mashrafe’s fitness with just two days left for the tournament.

‘Mashrafe is still in our squad because he is an integral part of this team. It depends on the situation - how he feels, and what is his fitness status,’ said Emon while talking to the media on Saturday.

‘If he is fit to play or if the situation is good, he will definitely play.’

Mashrafe appeared in the first five matches last season but was unable to continue due to fitness issues. In his absence, Mohammad Mithun took over the captaincy.

‘Until he is fit to play, we think we will not consider Mashrafe. We will wait for him. It is his call. When there is no more time, then we will call another player in his place,’ added Emon.

Earlier, the franchise informed that Mashrafe will play another role if he is reluctant to be part of the team as a cricketer but they are yet to clear the role.

The former Bangladeshi captain played his last match for the national team in 2020. Since then he has been continuing in domestic circuits.
