Recently retired from international cricket, former Bangladesh national team captain, Tamim Iqbal vowed to continue playing as long as he could in domestic circuit.

The southpaw stated that his next focus would be on two tournaments — the Dhaka Premier League and the Legends Cricket League.

The left-handed opener, arguably the greatest batter Bangladesh has ever produced, announced his retirement last week after meeting the national selectors ahead of the Champions Trophy.

Tamim is currently leading Fortune Barishal in the Bangladesh Premier League and scored his second fifty of the season on Thursday.

In the post-match press conference, Tamim didn’t want to talk about his retirement. He also didn’t enlighten the fact about him being in the cricket administration in the near future.

‘At this moment, there’s nothing specific to say about that,’ he told reporters.

However, the leading run-getter for Bangladesh in international cricket mentioned some of his post-retirement plans.

‘I’ll try to keep playing as long as I can. Now that I’m retired, I’ll qualify for leagues like the Legends League. If the Premier League happens on time, I’ll play that too.’

‘My focus is on these two tournaments. I’ll try to play as much as I can,’ added Tamim.

Tamim last played in international cricket in September 2023. But after he was snubbed from the ODI World Cup that year, Tamim maintained a distance from international cricket.

Ahead of the Champions Trophy, which is scheduled to be held in February in Pakistan and the UAE, the national selectors as well as the captain, Najmul Hossain Shanto — who’s also Tamim’s team-mate in Barishal — requested him to make a comeback.

But Tamim didn’t, as he announced his formal retirement via social media, citing that ‘he listened to his heart.’
