Nazmul Abedeen Fahim

Nazmul Abedeen Fahim was appointed as the convenor of the technical committee of the CCDM after the resignation of Enamul Haque following the recent events that sparked much controversy in the country’s cricket fraternity.

It started with the reduction of the sanction of Towhid Hridoy, the captain of the Mohammedan Sporting Club in the ongoing Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League, who had been banned for two matches after breaching the code of conduct.

But surprisingly, Hridoy returned to the field after serving a one-match ban with no clear answers how the ban was reduced.

The technical committee, which was previously headed by Enamul—the former national cricketer and international umpire—said that they didn’t do that. Enamul then resigned, citing a conflict of interest.

In the meantime, it was reported that Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid Saikat—who was the umpire Hridoy had the altercation with—has threatened to quit the job at the BCB. Saikat is the first and so far the only Bangladeshi umpire in the ICC Elite Panel.

The umpires were then called to the BCB on Wednesday.

Following the meeting, Iftekhar Ahmed, chairman of the Umpires’ committee, said, ‘Actually not Saikat; umpires were unsatisfied with the circumstances, so we called them and said that the cricket board’s stand is zero tolerance and we will abide by the rules of CCDM for the next decision.’

‘Saikat hasn’t resigned. But he was discontent. Going forward, he was reluctant to work. Many things happened in the last few days. Enamul resigned because he thought it was a conflict of interest,’ Iftekhar added.

Iftekhar also hoped that the next technical committee would sort out all the problems.

‘Everything is being referred to the technical committee now, and they will analyse everything and all the incidents before giving their decision,’ he said.

He also admitted that there was a mistake regarding the reduction of Hridoy’s sanction.

‘The right procedure wasn’t followed. It’s a mistake. According to the rules, the decision for reducing suspension or wavering suspension can only be made by CCDM or its technical committee. The technical committee will correct the procedure. It’s their job,’ he said.

There were also reports that the meeting of the match referees also got heated recently. Debabrata Paul, one of the referees, also sent a letter to the president of the BCB.

‘I was present at the meeting. There were no incidents during the meeting,’ claimed Iftekhar.

‘All the match referees have handed in a letter, and Debobrata Paul has also handed in a letter. The umpires’ committee will forward the letter in the next board meeting so that the unwanted situation that happened does not take place in future. The board directors will decide the next course of action,’ he added.
