The National Board of Revenue has received more than 1.63 lakh income tax return submissions online since September 9, said its chairman Md Abdur Rahman Khan on Sunday.

He made the statement at a press conference at the revenue board’s Agargaon office in the capital Dhaka on the occasion of announcing ‘Tax Service Month’.

The NBR might consider extending the deadline for income tax return submission taking the political instability during the July-August period into account after discussing with higher authority, he said.

Usually, the final day of November is the last day for individual taxpayers to submit income returns.

‘We have taken enough security measures to protect the data of our taxpayers. Not even the creators and operators of this programme will be able to access the information of the taxpayers,’ Abdur Rahman said.

The NBR chairman said that special importance was being given to online filing of income tax returns of individual taxpayers.

‘Online filing of income tax returns has been made mandatory for all government officials and employees under Dhaka north and south, Narayanganj and Gazipur city corporations and for officials and employees of all scheduled bank, mobile phone operators and several multinational companies,’ he said.

He added that manual returns would not be accepted for those individuals.

The NBR opened the online return filing system on September 9 to facilitate return submissions and compliances for the tax year 2024-2025.

Individual taxpayers can prepare and file their returns online using the NBR web site.

The NBR chairman also said that using e-return system, individual taxpayers can prepare and submit returns themselves, make tax payment through online banking, credit card or debit card or mobile financial services, get instant proof of payment, return submissions, income tax payment certificate and TIN certificate, and copy of e-returns for the previous tax year.

Besides, the National Board of Revenue has set up a call centre to assist taxpayers with any issues related to e-returns on September 12, he added.
