The Southeast Debate Club has recently hosted the National Debate Competition titled SEUDC Nationals 2024 at the permanent campus of the university in Dhaka, said a press release.
Based on the July movement against the autocratic regime, the theme of the competition, ‘Voice for Resurrection’, was held in October 18-19, bringing together 48 universities, colleges, and schools.
The competition aimed to revive critical discussion regarding the pressing issue of society, politics and global issues.
The event commenced with an opening ceremony attended by Professor Farhana Helal Mehtab, dean, school of arts and social sciences and convener of SEUDC Nationals 2024.
All teams showed respect to the July movement martyrs with a minute’s silence.
The debates began in the British parliamentary format, with intense rounds challenging participants on constitution, socio-political, economic, and global issues. In the final, the participating four teams were BUP1, BUP2, East West and MIST.Â
The final debate topic was ‘This house regrets the glorification of benevolent dictators’.
Competitors presented compelling arguments, citing examples from Bangladesh’s former autocratic ruler, Sheikh Hasina, to other dictators around the world, leaving the audience captivated.
Attorney general Md Asaduzzaman attended the event as chief guest, while Judge Shamima Afroze was present as special guest.
They also distributed prizes among the winners and runners-up at the conclusion of the competition.
East West University emerged as the champion, while BUP secured the runner-up position.
