Rajshahi University students who went on a hunger strike on Thursday evening demanding cancellation of the quota facility for the children and grand-children of the university teachers, officials and employees for admission to undergraduate courses under the 2024-25 academic session postponed their strike on Friday noon.

They postponed the strike at about 12:30pm after vice-chancellor professor Saleh Hasan Naqib had assured them of considering their demand in the meeting of the admission review committee, scheduled for Saturday noon.

After postponing the strike, population science and human resource development student Mehedi Hasan Maruf, also convener of RU Chhatra Odhikar Parishad, told reporters that they had postponed their strike following the assurance from the vice-chancellor.

‘We will go for a tougher movement if our demand is not met by tomorrow,’ he said.

Earlier on Thursday afternoon, the RU admission committee decided to cancel the quota facility for freedom fighters’ grandchildren, but to retain the five per cent quota for their children for admission to undergraduate courses under the 2024-25 academic session.

They, however, decided to keep the ward quota for the children and grand-children of the university teachers, officials and employees.

In protest at retaining the ward quota, a group of students went on a hunger strike at Shaheed Zoha Chattar of the university on Thursday evening.

RU’s decision to retain the ward quota, meanwhile, has also drawn widespread criticism from the university teachers and students.

Management department associate professor Solaiman Chowdhury told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that quota facilities were mainly preserved for the backward communities of society and the state.

‘I strongly demand the university authorities to cancel the ward quota and the admission of those who were earlier admitted to the university despite failing to secure the minimum pass marks in the entrance tests,’ he added.
