
The heatwave that began on May 13 ended on Sunday as day air temperatures dropped below 36C almost all over Bangladesh amid continued rain, accompanied by lightning and hailstorms.
Lightning strikes killed at least three people in Sunamganj and Kurigram between Sunday night and Monday as nor’westers swept large parts of Bangladesh with heavy to very heavy rain.  Â
Bangladesh Meteorological Department on Monday warned that a rather prolonged wet spell is going to set in with forecasts of a low pressure forming over the Bay of Bengal by tomorrow.
‘The rest of the month is likely to remain rather wet and comfortable,’ said meteorologist Shahnaj Sultana.
On Monday, Bangladesh’s highest maximum day air temperature of 36C was recorded in Mongla.
In Dhaka, the maximum day air temperature was recorded to be 33.4C.
Bangladesh’s longest-ever heatwave lasted 37 days between March 31 and May 6. At least 15 people died from heatstroke during the heatwave after April 22.
During the longest heatwave, the country’s highest day temperature of 43.8C was recorded in Jashore on April 30, the hottest day in over three decades. Districts such as Chuadanga and Jashore saw day temperatures stay at 40C or above for almost three weeks between mid-April and early May. Day temperatures frequently exceeded 40C in Dhaka, which saw its peak at 40.5C on April 30, the second hottest day in the capital in the past 64 years.
In the 24 hours until 6:00pm on Monday, Bangladesh’s highest maximum rainfall of 121mm was recorded in Patuakhali. Saidpur recorded 64mm of rainfall while Bogura recorded 51mm of rainfall.
In the 24 hours until 6:00pm on Tuesday, rain accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at many places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Sylhet divisions and at a few places over Chattogram division, the BMD said.
Rainfall activity is likely to increase over the next five days, said the BMD on Monday afternoon.
Sunamganj’s district relief and rehabilitation office confirmed two deaths from lightning on Monday morning.
The deceased were Dulan Miah, a resident of Noagaon of Chhatak, and Kuddus Miah, a resident of Bahadurpur of Chhatak. They died at around 10:00am while they were unloading sand from a vessel.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Kurigram reported the death of Meher Jamal, 50, a tailor. He died at 10:00pm while he was returning home from his workplace at Char Sitaidhar village of Mogolbasa union.
At least a dozen people were killed by lightning since Saturday.
