
Water stagnation triggered by heavy rain gripped most of the Chattogram city areas on Thursday.
Agrabad, Halishahar, Chawkbazar, Kapashgola, 2 No gate, Muradpur, Oxygen, BohadderHut and Shah Amanat bridge areas and main roads went underwater.
According to weather forecast office of Patenga, 141.8mm rain has been recorded in 24 hours from Wednesday to Thursday morning. The high tide in the bay also a reason of increasing water, the office said.
On Thursday morning, from 6:00am to 9:00am, 55 mm rain was recorded. On Tuesday, 60mm rain was recorded from morning 9:00am to 12:00pm.
In Chattogram city, it has been raining since Friday last worsening the water stagnation situation.
Office-goers were suffering because of lack of public transport while Rickshaw pullers were charging extra, said Robin Day, a private firm official who lives in Shah Amanat Bridge area.
The weather forecast office also warned about the land slide in Chattogram city and districts due to heavy rain fall and volunteers’ team were formed to shift the families to cyclone centres.
‘With megaphones, we are asking people to shift to safer place while the authorities arranged shelter for around 2000 people, said Tofail Islam, district commissioner of Chattogram Division.
Tofail, who is also new administrator of Chattogram City Corporation, said, ‘The district administration and CCC are working together to save the people’s life and rescue teams are ready to help people if anything bad happen.’
Business activities are suspended at Khatunganj, a wholesale market in the port city, though no water stagnation has been reported in the area this year.
M Sekandar, a spice businessman at Khatunganj’s Hamidullah Market, said that stock of merchandises comparatively is lower than last week.
Rain blocked the roads in several areas and transports are not running due to water logging, he added.
The activities of cargo handling have been slow due to bad weather but container handling is quite normal at Chattogram Port, said Omar Farque, secretary of Chattogram Port Authority.
On Thursday, a total 16 container vessels were waiting at the outer anchorage and four have berthed at general cargo berth and two at CCT jetty and four at NCT jetty respectively.
The bad weather has compelled to suspend the train communication with Dhaka and other parts of the country since this morning as sections of rail tracks in Feni were submerged in floodwater.
Saihidul Islam, chief operating superintendent of Chattogram Railway confirmed the news.
Bus services from Chattogram to Dhaka also halted due to flood at Feni area.
Monowar Hossain, general manager of Saint Martin Paribahan said flood water caused traffic congestion on the highway and most of the passengers have cancelled the tickets.
