
Environment, forest and climate change adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan said on Wednesday that the government decided to strictly implement a ban on production, storage, transportation, marketing and use of polythene and polypropylene shopping bags.
She also said that decisions would be taken to conduct drives across the country from October 1 to implement the ban, said a press release.
Rizwana made the remarks while chairing a consultative meeting with the Shop Owners’ Association and plastic product traders.
The meeting focused on the adverse effects of plastic on the environment and controlling plastic pollution.
She emphasised the need to find alternatives to plastic usage for environmental protection and sustainable development.
Rizwana also said that the pre-announced drives in super shops would also be conducted from October 1.
She announced that a fair for plastic alternatives was scheduled at the department of environment on September 29.
Bangladesh Shop Owners’ Association president Helal Uddin, Bangladesh Plastic Packaging, Roll Manufacturers Owners and Trade Association president Abu Motaleb, Bangladesh Plastic Goods Manufacturers and Exporters Association president Shamim Ahmed, Plastic and Rubber Shoe Merchants Association of Bangladesh president Hazi Md Kamrul Hasan and Bangladesh Bread Biscuit O Confectionery Prostutkarak Samity president Jalal Uddin, among others, were present at the meeting.
On September 9, the adviser said that super shops couldn’t use polythene shopping bags and polypropylene bags and provide those to the customers from October 1.
