The Dhaka DocImpact Lab began its journey inaugurating a three-day workshop at Bengal Shilpalay in Dhanmondi, Dhaka on Friday.

The DDIL is an initiative of Dhaka DocLab designed to empower documentary filmmakers from South Asia. The inaugural session of the workshop was held in the morning.

Dhaka Doclab chairman Nasir Uddin Yousuff, Dhaka DocLab director Tareq Ahmed, Dhaka Doclab trustee board member Luva Nahid Chowdhury and Dhaka DocImpact Lab director Rahi Hasan spoke at the event.

‘The lab aims to equip filmmakers with the tools and knowledge necessary to create meaningful social change through their documentaries,’ said Tareq Ahmed.

‘This initiative aims to reduce reliance on conditional Western funding, which often compromises creative autonomy,’ he added.

‘Documentary filmmakers have the responsibility to check the impacts of their films, which should be inclusive and empower the people by creating social impact. This is the first edition of the lab, next year we will try to accommodate South-Asian filmmakers,’ said Nasir Uddin Yousuff.

‘We have to think about our production and its impact on society and also distribute our work globally,’ said Luva Nahid Chowdhury.

Six projects by Bangladeshi filmmakers, including ‘Wating for Winter’ by Farid Ahmed, ‘Doprujhiri’ by Asma Beethe, ‘Embracing Fatherhood’ by Partha Sarathi Sen Gupta, ‘Aanda Story’ by Md Shakawat Hossen, ‘Pankauri’ by Jafar Muhammad and ‘Songs of Sunflower’ by Abid Sarker Shohag are participating in the workshop.

Firelight Media artist programmes manager Ximena Amescua Cuenca, A-Doc impact initiative co-lead Gerry Leonard, Dhaka DocLab director Tareq Ahmed, filmmaker Rahi Hasan, filmmaker and educator Rafiqul Anowar Russell and filmmaker-mentor Elizabeth D Costa are participating as mentors in the three-day workshop.

Journalist-filmmaker Zainab Sultan, filmmaker Loud Florencia Verela and Doc Society African Programmes director Emily Wanja will conduct the workshop virtually.

The workshop will end on Sunday. Â
