Defending champions Bashundhara Kings can clinch their fifth successive Bangladesh Premier League title with a win over Mohammedan Sporting Club when the two sides face-off in Mymensingh today.

The match is scheduled to kick-off at the Rofique Uddin Bhuiyan Stadium at 4:00pm and T Sports will televise the game live from the ground.

Under the tutelage of Oscar Bruzon, Kings are leading the 10-team table with 37 points from 14 games, while second-placed Mohammedan have 28 points from the same number of outings.

So a win today would take Kings’ tally to an unassailable 40 points with only three games to spare.

Kings won their first of four consecutive league titles in their debut season in BPL in 2019, before the next edition was cancelled due to Covid-19 pandemic, and they remained unstoppable in the next three editions, winning them in 2021, 2022, and 2023.

Bruzon, who has been the coach of Kings since 2018, has led the cash-rich outfit to win nine top-tier championships, including four BPL titles, three Independence Cups, and two Federation Cups.

As the country’s biggest spending club, Kings first enjoyed their top-tier tournament success in 2018 when they won the Independence Cup, followed by victories in 2022 and 2023, as well as the Federation Cup titles in the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 seasons.

On the other hand, Mohammedan are the only side to hand Kings’ their lone defeat of the season when they beat them 1-0 in the first-leg in the ongoing BPL.

Under the guidance of former national team captain Alfaz Ahmed, the traditional black and white outfits are so far unbeaten in the league.

Mohammedan had never won a BPL title, but under Alfaz, who took over the charge of the side in mid-2023, they are trying to return to their glorious heydays, and they showed some glimpses of their improvement by winning the Federation Cup last season after a 14-year gap. They proved that it wasn’t a fluke by reaching the final of the competition yet again this season.

Under Alfaz, Mohammedan also reached the final of the Independence Cup in 2023 before losing the little to Kings.

Though Bruzon was fully focused on winning the title, he heaped praise on Mohammedan’s technical and physical abilities.

‘All talk about our title chances [that] depends on how we do tomorrow [Saturday], so we are completely focused on it,’ the Spaniard told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.

‘They [Mohammedan] are a fit team, capable of performing under high intensity. They are physically very strong; concede few goals, dangerous in counter-attacks, and effective from set pieces.’

Meanwhile, in Friday’s return leg matches, six-time champions and third-placed Abahani Limited were held to a 1-1 draw by Police Football Club in Gopalganj, while the match between Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra and Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society also ended in a 1-1 in Munshiganj.
