
Bashundhara Kings is set to become the second Bangladeshi club after Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra to win a domestic treble when they take on defending champions Mohammedan Sporting Club in the final of the Federation Cup in Mymensingh today. Â
The final is scheduled to begin at 3:00pm at the Rofique Uddin Bhuiyan Stadium, with T Sports televising the match live from the venue.
Earlier, in 2012–13, Sk Russel won the BPL, the Independence Cup and the Federation Cup to become the first team in the country to win an unprecedented domestic treble.
Making their debut in the country’s top-tier competitions in 2018, Kings have bagged 10 titles so far in six seasons, all under the tutelage of Spanish coach Oscar Bruzon.
They won their first of five straight league titles in their inaugural season in the Bangladesh Premier League in 2019, but the next edition was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and they were unstoppable in the following four editions, winning in 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024.
Kings defeated Mohammedan 2-1 in Mymensingh on May 11, 2024, to win their sixth BPL title, and they defeated the same team by the same margin in the Independence Cup final in Gopalganj on December 18, 2023.
Previously, they won the Independence Cup in 2018 and 2022, as well as the Federation Cup in 2019-2020 and 2020-2021.
Kings advanced to this year’s Federation Cup final by defeating 12-time champions Abahani Limited 3-0 in the second semi-final in Gopalganj on May 14, while Mohammedan defeated Police Football Club 2-1 in the first semi-final in Munshiganj on May 7.
Alfaz Ahmed, a former national team captain, took over Mohammedan in March 2023 and led the team to their first Federation Cup triumph in 14 years, defeating arch-rivals Abahani in the final in Cumilla on May 30, 2023.
