No case was filed until Friday evening in the incident of theft of goddess crown, which was gifted by Indian prime minister Narendra Modi, at Jeshoreshwari Temple in Satkhira’s Shyamnagar on Thursday.

The Indian high commission in Dhaka, meanwhile, in a formal message on Friday urged Bangladesh to investigate the theft, take action against perpetrators and recover the crown gifted by Modi during his visit in 2021.

The high commission also voiced serious concern over the incident.

Shyamnagar police station inspector Taizur  Rahman said that members of law enforcement agencies, including the police, were looking into the matter.

‘The temple’s CCTV footage showed that a youth was removing the crown. We are trying to arrest him,’ he said, adding that no complaint, however, has been lodged by the temple authority over the theft of the crown.

According to the temple authority, priest Dilip Mukherjee left the temple after completing the day’s worship at about 2:00pm on Thursday.

Shortly afterwards, a member of temple’s cleaning staff entered to clean the premises and later, she noticed that the crown was missing from the deity’s head.

Modi had visited Jeshoreshwari Temple on March 27, 2021, as part of his trip to Bangladesh and placed the crown on the head of the deity.
