The Ministry of External Affairs of India on Thursday confirmed that the deposed prime minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, was still living in India.
‘Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had come to India for safety reasons; she continues to be here,’ Indian English language daily The Statesman, quoting external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal as saying at a media briefing in New Delhi, reported.
His comments coincided with Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal issuing an arrest warrant against Hasina, who resigned as prime minister and fled to India on August 5 amid a student-led mass uprising.
In response to a question, the spokesperson said that there were currently limited visa operations by India in Bangladesh.
‘When the situation becomes conducive, full operations will resume,’ Randhir was quoted in the report as saying.
