Foreign affairs adviser Md Touhid Hossain is scheduled for his first bilateral visit to China from January 20 to January 24 at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart after the formation of the interim government in August.

‘Foreign adviser Touhid Hossain will pay his first bilateral visit to China from January 20 to January 24. During the visit, he will have a bilateral meeting with his Chinese counterpart,’ foreign ministry spokesperson Muhammad Rafiqul Alam told the weekly media briefing at the ministry on Thursday.


The adviser’s visit would focus economic cooperation, commerce and trade expansion and a sustainable solution to Rohingya crisis among others, said Rafiqul, also the director general of the public diplomacy wing.

Both the countries were going to celebrate the 50 years of their diplomatic relations this year, he said, adding that although the amount of trade between the two countries stood at $25 billion, it was heavily tilted to China.ÌýÌý

He said that the visit would be very crucial since the bilateral relations between China and Bangladesh was already elevated to ‘comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.

Rafiqul said that the adviser would also hold a meeting with a business community of Shanghai for increasing China’s investment in Bangladesh.

Asked about Dhaka’s request to New Delhi for extradition of Sheikh Haisina, who fled to India amid the student-led mass uprising on August 5, he said that Bangladesh was waiting for India’s response.

About the situation of Bangladeshis having businesses in Mozambique, he said that there were 5,000 Bangladeshis in the East African country and many of them involved in business. Around 300 to 500 shops of Bangladeshi owners were looted and destroyed in the recent riots in the country over their election results, the foreign ministry spokesperson said.
