Today is the 14th anniversary of the death of poet, essayist, researcher and literary critic, Abdul Mannan Syed.

Born on August 3 in 1943 in West Bengal, British India, Abdul Mannan Syed obtained his Bachelor of Arts in 1963 and Master of Arts in 1964 in Bangla from the University of Dhaka. He got his PhD from Rabindra Bharati University in India.


The poet started writing poems at his early age, and his first collection of poem ‘Janmandha Kabita Guchchha’ got published in 1967.

Aspired to change in his subject and style of writing, in his poems, Mannan Syed, reflects the consciousness of death, symbolism, romanticism, surrealism, and absurdity, using moon, sun, sky and cloud as symbols of his imagination.

He had been the executive director of the Nazrul Institute from 2002 to 2004. He was also associated with the monthly literary magazine named ‘Shilpataru’.

His literary works include ‘Nirbachita Kabita’, ‘Parabastab Kabita’, ‘Park Street-e Ek Ratri’, ‘Machh Series’, ‘Satyer Mato Badmas’, ‘Chalo Jai Parokhse’, ‘Mrityur Adhik Lal Kshudha’, ‘Pariprekshiter Das Dasi’ and ‘Kshudha Prem Agun’. 

For his contribution to Bangla literature, he received several awards, including thye Bangla Academy Literary Award, Alaol Literary Award, Nazrul Padak, Lekhika Sangha Award,

Abdul Mannan Syed passed away on September 5, 2010 in Dhaka.
