
Today is the 86th anniversary of the birth of poet Belal Chowdhury.
Born on November 12, 1938 in Feni, Belal Chowdhury emerged as a poet in the 1960s.
A prolific writer, he wrote over 50 50 literary works, including collections of poems, stories, essays and translations.
His collections of poems include Nishad Pradeshe, Atmapratikriti, Sthirjiban O Nisarga, Swapnabandi, Selai Kora Chhaya, Kabitar Komalbane, Jabajjiban Sashram Ullase and Batrish Nambar.
His notable collections of essays include Jibaner Ashcharja Phalgun, Niruddesh Haway Haway, Nabarage Naba Anande and Muhurtabhashya.
He also translated works of many famous poets and writers such as Octavio Paz, Pablo Neruda, Dylan Thomas and Jorge Luis Borges.
For his contribution to Bangla literature, he received Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1984 and Ekushey Padak in 2014.
Belal Chowdhury passed away on April 24, 2018.
