Today is the 89th anniversary of birth of novelist and essayist Bashir Al Helal.

Born on January 6, 1936 in Murshidabad, British India, Bashir Al Helal joined the Bangla Academy as assistant principal of the translation department in 1967.


He was also an eminent translator, children鈥檚 book writer, essayist and researcher.

His literary works include Kalo Ilish, Anaraser Hasi, Kandari, Kishor Bangla Uchcharan Manjari, Bangla Bhashar Nanan Bibechana, Bangla Gadya, Amader Kabita, Bhasha Andolaner Sei Mohonay, Tader Srishtir Path, Ghritakumari, Jibaner Sukh, Shesh Panpatra and Nurjahander Madhumas.

He also wrote two quintessential titled Bhasha Andolaner Itihash and Bangla Ekademir Itihash.

He also translated the Hamoodur Rahman Commission report on the 1971 genocide from Urdu.

The writer received Alaol Literary Award and Bangla Academy Literary Award.

Bashir Al Helal passed away on July 30, 2021
