The minimum wage board has finalised its recommendations, setting Tk聽12,000 as gross monthly minimum pay for the country鈥檚 cement industry workers with a provision of 5 per cent yearly increment.

The government has brought the sector under wage regulation for the first time.


The labour ministry on January 4, 2023 formed the wage board through appointing representatives of the industry owners and workers to the board to set the wages for the workers and employees of cement industry.

The board through a gazette notification on August 22 published its recommendations, proposing Tk聽12,000 as minimum wages for the workers of the industry.

The minimum wage board also sought, if there is any, written objections against or suggestions on the recommendations in 14 days.

In its recommendations, the wage board has incorporated six grades for workers in the cement sector.

For the grade-6, the board has proposed Tk聽12,000 as the minimum monthly wage that includes the basic pay of Tk聽6,400, 50 per cent of the basic pay (Tk 3,200) as house rent, Tk聽1,500 as medical allowance and Tk聽900 as travel allowance.

The wage board has recommended the minimum wage for the grade-5 workers at Tk聽12,525 that includes Tk聽6,750 as basic pay, 50 per cent of the basic pay as house rent, Tk聽1,500 as medical allowance and Tk聽900 as travel allowance.

For the grade-4, the proposed minimum wage is Tk聽15,000 that includes Tk 8,400 as basic pay, 50 per cent of the basic pay as house rent, Tk 1,500 as medical allowance and Tk聽900 as travel allowance.

In the proposals, the minimum wage for the grade-3 workers has been set at Tk聽18,825 that includes Tk聽10,950 as basic pay, 50 per cent of the basic pay as house rent, Tk聽1,500 as medical allowance and Tk聽900 as travel allowance.

According to the recommendations, the gross pay for the grade-2 workers has been set at Tk 25,005 that includes Tk聽15,070 as basic pay, 50 per cent of the basic pay as house rent, Tk聽1,500 as medical allowance and Tk聽900 as travel allowance.

For the grade-1, the proposed minimum wage is Tk聽31,260 that includes Tk聽19,240 as basic pay, 50 per cent of the basic pay as house rent, Tk聽1,500 as medical allowance and Tk聽900 as travel allowance.

The wage board has suggested Tk 8,800 as the monthly gross pay for the apprentice workers with the provision of a six-month apprenticeship.

The board has also proposed Tk 12,000 as gross minimum monthly pay for the employees of the cement sector.
