A group of Bangladesh Bank officials on Sunday again urged the interim government to remove two deputy governors, Nurun Nahar and Habibur Rahman, who were appointed during the tenure of Awami League-led government deposed on August 5 through a mass uprising.
They held a demonstration in front of the central bank’s headquarters at Motijheel in the capital Dhaka, demanding the resignation of the two.
The protesters also met governor Ahsan H Mansur and issued an ultimatum to remove the deputy governors.
They alleged that during the Awami League government, certain groups looted several banks with the assistance of some BB officials, including the contractually appointed deputy governors.
Due to massive irregularities, some banks are now struggling to return depositors’ money amid mounting distressed assets, they said.
Although some contractual appointments, including a policy adviser, were cancelled after the fall of the Awami League government, Nurun Nahar and Habibur have remained in office, they added.
Earlier on October 10, the group of officials demanded the resignation of the two deputy governors.
The protesting officials also alleged that Nurun Nahar, who oversees some key departments such as human resources, was exerting undue influences, including favouritism in officer transfers.
They alleged that Nurun Nahar was providing protection to individuals involved in banking sector looting during the Awami League regime.
They demanded an immediate resignation of the two deputy governors and the transfer of other officials involved in irregularities and warned of further protests involving all levels of bank employees if their demands are not met.
They also demanded identifying the officials who colluded with groups like S Alam Group in looting banks and taking action against them.
