The government is taking initiatives to make jute bags more accessible and affordable on the market, said commerce adviser Sk Bashir Uddin on Monday.

Speaking at a meeting at the Ministry of Commerce Ministry’s conference room in the Secretariat, Sheikh Bashir Uddin highlighted the benefits of jute bags, describing them as reusable, cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

The meeting was organised by the Ministry of Textiles and Jute to ensure the use of jute bags as an alternative to polythene bags in Dhaka’s marketplaces.

‘We want jute bags to be easily available at low prices. Their advantage is that they can be reused, they are cost-effective, and they are environmentally friendly. To make their marketing easier, we seek your input. Please provide suggestions on how we can promote these bags better, including the required sizes, so we can implement your advice,’ Bashir said.

He encouraged market stakeholders to participate in the production and trade of jute bags, saying, ‘I want you to manufacture and market jute bags yourselves. The government is committed to promoting jute bags in the market, and we are working towards that goal.’

During the discussion, market representatives emphasised the need for ensuring a steady supply of jute bags at affordable prices.

They also called for stricter measures to curb the production of polythene bags. Abdul Halim, president of Uttara-Badda Wholesale Market, suggested that establishing authorised dealers would facilitate better supply and accessibility of jute bags.
