Young Bangladeshi Tagore singer Joyita Tithi and Indian author and Tagore researcher Pitam Sengupta performed in an event on Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore on Tuesday.

Chaitanya Prakashani, a Sylhet-based publishing house, organised the event titled Amar Kantha Hote Gaan Ke Nilo at the auditorium of Bishwa Sahitya Kendra in the capital.


The event featured Tagore songs and discussion on him.

Thespian Ataur Rahman delivered the welcome speech at the programme.

鈥楢s a playwright, Rabindranath was very political. In 鈥淩aktakarabi鈥, he says that women will save the world. His essay 鈥淐risis in Civilisation鈥 is still relevant in contemporary world politics,鈥 said Ataur Rahman, adding, 鈥業 thank the organiser to organise the programme.鈥

Mentioning that Tagore lent his voice to 32 songs, Pitam Sengupta said that Rabindranath was well-known as a singer before receiving the Nobel prize in 1913.

鈥楢s he suffered from many diseases, he lost his singing ability. He was not recognised as a singer after his death,鈥 he said.

Joyita Tithi rendered Tagore songs, including 鈥楪aner Surer Asankhani鈥, 鈥楳ori Lo Mori鈥, 鈥楾umi Sandhyaro Meghmala鈥 and 鈥楢mar Kantha Hote Gaan Ke Nilo鈥.

Chaitanya Prakashani publisher Rajib Chy said that they would like to organise such events regularly.

The same event will be held in Sunamganj and Sylhet on July 5 and 6.鈥
