Ruman Shana issued an unconditional apology to the Bangladesh Archery Federation almost two months after announcing his retirement from the national fold, said the federation’s general secretary, Kazi Rajib Uddin Ahmed Chapal.
Shana resigned from the national team in late February, citing ‘under pressure,’ and the federation accepted his resignation following a discussion at an executive committee meeting on March 15.
The following day (March 16), the 28-year-old Shana hinted in a function that he would consider returning to the national fold provided the BAF improved facilities.
‘My position is unchanged. I will not return unless the federation increases the facilities,’ Shana told the media at the time.
Following Shana’s retirement decision, the BAF organisers were heavily criticised by the country’s sports fraternity on several platforms for failing to provide the archers with the necessary facilities.
But Shana made a surprise move on May 2 to return to the national squad by submitting a letter to the federation with an unequivocal apology.
‘He [Shana] submitted a letter to the federation, seeking an unconditional apology. Now it is up to him to determine whether to quit or return to the national fold within the federation’s existing system and facilities,’ Chapal told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Wednesday.
‘However, it will not be easy for him because the topic will be discussed at the federation’s executive committee meeting [in three months’ time] before a decision is made. In addition, he [Shana] will have to go through a trial to demonstrate the performance level required for a national team player.
‘As some of his media comments have affected the image of the federation and other bodies, and we have already seen some disciplinary difficulties with him, the federation can ask him to guarantee that he will not make the same mistakes again in the future,’ he added.
Earlier on November 14, 2022, the BAF imposed a two-year ban on Shana on disciplinary grounds after the Bangladesh Ansar archer physically assaulted one of his team-mates on several occasions, as evidenced by the federation.
Later, the federation reduced the punishment by allowing him to return to action in April 2023 after he unconditionally apologised to the federation and admitted his guilt.
Shana won bronze in the recurve men’s single event at the 2019 World Archery Championships, becoming the first Bangladeshi archer to win a medal in this tournament, as well as direct qualification to the Tokyo Olympics 2021.
