Bangladesh’s campaign for the Paris Olympics 2024 began on Thursday, with archer Sagor Islam finishing 45th in the ranking round of the men’s recurve individual event at the Esplanade des Invalides, a day before the Games’ opening ceremony.

Sagor, 18, the only athlete to get a direct entry into the Games among five athletes from Bangladesh, scored 652 points to secure his place among 64 archers, including Olympics and World record holders in this event.

In his first appearance at the world’s biggest sporting extravaganza, Sagor ended up the ranking round 34 points behind the top scorer South Korea’s Kim Woojin, who holds the Olympic record score of 700 points that he made in Rio in 2016.

The current World Record holder in this event, Ellison Brady of the USA, placed seventh by scoring 677 points, which is 23 points less than his best 700, which he made in Lima in August 2019.

In the first round of the elimination stage on Wednesday, Sagor will face Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Mauro Nespoli of Italy, who placed 20th in the ranking round by scoring 670 points.
