Bangladesh shooter Robiul Islam ended his Paris Olympics 2024 campaign on a dismal note as he failed to secure a place in the top eight after the qualification round of the men’s 10-metre air rifle event at the Chateauroux Shooting Centre on Sunday.

Robiul, who received a wildcard to enter the world’s most prestigious multidisciplinary sports carnival for the first time, ended up being 43rd among 49 participants scoring 624.2 points, which is 5.6 points less than Croatia’s Gorsa Petar (629.8), who finished eighth.

The 25-year-old Robiul had hoped to score around 630 in the qualification round at Paris but could not even match his career-best international score of 628 which he made in the Asian Championships in Jakarta in January 2024.

In the event, Sheng Lihao of China, who won the silver medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, placed top in the qualification round scoring 631.7 points.

The 19-year-old Lihao – the current qualification world record holder with 637.9 points – paired with Huang Yuting to win the first gold medal for China in Paris in the 10-metre mixed team air rifle event earlier on Saturday.

Argentina’s Gutierrez Marcelo Julian (631.7), Italy’s Sollazzo Danilo Dennis (631.4), Croatia’s Maricic Miran (631.3), South Korea’s Choe Daehan (630.8), Sweden’s Lindgren Victor (630.7), and India’s Babuta Arjun (630.1) are the other six shooters who qualified for the finals by finishing second to seventh, respectively.
